Ugh! Ali's Kitchen Disaster

So remember how a couple days ago I said that I much prefer baking over cooking? Well, after last night, I'm not so sure I like either! You see, it all started out innocently enough. I think it's pretty obvious if you read this blog that I love chocolate. Well, I had never had a chocolate pie until a couple friends brought over a Paula Deen Old Fashioned Fudge Pie from Walmart after Luke was born (thanks Jenn and Libby!!). I instantly fell in love...it was so good! So I've been wanting to make one of these pies ever since.  Then I came across this recipe for an Old Fashioned Chocolate Pie with Meringue Topping from Mommy's Kitchen and couldn't wait any longer.

So things started out great. Luke was in a good mood, smiling and babbling to me as he sat in his bouncer in the kitchen. I put the (premade) pie crust in the oven and started on the pudding. Let me tell you, it smelled great! After it started bubbling, I moved the pudding mixture to a cool burner and started on the meringue. I've never made meringue before and was a bit worried, but using the egg white/cream of tarter/sugar method seemed to work well for me.

Right about this time, the timer for the pie crust went off, so I took it out of the oven and set it on the stove. After a minute or so I smelled something burning.

Can you guess where I'm going with this?

I hadn't turned the burner off from the pudding mixture and it was still hot. I rushed over to move the pie pan off the burner and then CRACK...the glass pie pan burst into pieces. Ugh! Glass was everywhere.

Thank goodness it missed Luke and me. After this fiasco, Luke won't be helping me cook anymore! Needless to say, I threw everything away (chocolate pie with a side of glass, anyone?) and had a big mess to clean up. Now, what to do with that burnt linoleum? I haven't yet told the hubby that part.

Looking back, I should've known it wasn't going to be a good day in the kitchen when I came home to find that Sally had peed in the kitchen and our bamboo vase had broken!

Oh well! I will be trying this recipe again very soon :)

  1. It happens to the best of us! I have been married for nearly 8 years, and I have spent the majority of those 8 years IN.THE.KITCHEN(where I belong ;-)). Pot holders get set on fire. Beans burn. Glass shatters. Fingers get sliced. I am SURE that your pie would have been DIVINE had it not have been for the broken glass! May you try your recipe again soon, and save me a slice and invite me over to eat it :-)

  2. So sorry Ali, although it is a bit funny too:) I've had many kitchen disasters myself - broken dishes, catching food on fire after having it too close to the broiler, etc. It all makes for a good story, right?!
