Hiking at Vogel State Park

Hiking is one of our favorite things to do as a family, so we do it as often as possible. We're fortunate that there are several nice trails within 15 minutes of our house, yet we enjoy driving a couple hours to get to even more scenic trails. There's nothing quite like taking deep breaths of fresh air, while surrounded with beautiful mountain scenery. We went hiking at Red Top Mountain State Park today and while snapping some photos, I realized that I haven't blogged about our hiking adventures in awhile. Now I'm going to play a bit of catch up, starting with this hike from one of the last days of 2011.

After Christmas, our good friends, the Pruitts, invited us up to their cabin in Jasper to go hiking. While our original hiking plans didn't pan out, we ended up going to Vogel State Park. We weren't quite sure what to expect, but the trails ended up being better than we expected. It started out a bit rocky; however, when we began following the red trail markings straight up a steep incline. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the path and after zigzagging a couple times, we finally realized that we were following boundary lines (oops!) and headed back down to the trailhead. Once we figured out where the trail went, it was smooth sailing, and we all had a good laugh. There were some steep, rugged spots along the way, all of which led to a beautiful overlook at the top.

We even saw some snow and ice along the way...a rarity in Georgia!

Luke slept most of the way. When he woke up right after we reached the top, he said
 "That was a fun hike!"

Here's the whole gang. What a great day!
